Flaxseed, also referred to as Linseed, has either a golden or brown seed coat and is flat and oval in shape.

The color of the seed does not affect the nutritional composition, both have the same specifications.

Flaxseeds are rich in Omega-3 fatty acid, protein, fibre and antioxidants which are important for good health. In addition, flaxseed contributes to the texture of foods and adds a nutty flavour when added to food formulations.

One serving provides a good amount of protein, fiber, and Omega-3 fatty acids. Research shows it may help lower the risk of some cancers, help maintain a healthy weight, and reduce cholesterol and blood pressure. With it’s mild, nutty flavour and crisp, crunchy consistency, milled flaxseed can be used in whole grain porridges and sprinkled on salads and on rolls, muffns, bagels, and breads prior to baking to give a pleasing appearance and added crunch.

Milled flaxseed can also be folded into bread doughs before baking. Add a tablespoon of ground flaxseed to your hot or cold breakfast cereal. Add a teaspoon of ground flaxseed to mayonnaise or mustard when making a sandwich.

Mix a tablespoon of ground flaxseed into an 8-ounce container of yogurt.
Bake ground flaxseed into cookies, muffins, breads and other baked goods.
